Trafalgar Day 2020

Trafalgar Day 2020

Wouldham All Saints Church of England Primary School has a long association with marking Trafalgar Day.

For well over 100 years children from the school have visited All Saints Church to lay flowers on the grave of Walter Burke. He was a resident of Wouldham and served for many years in the Royal Navy, being purser on board the flagship HMS Victory and present at the battle of Trafalgar in 1805.

The writing on Walter Burke's gravestone says "he cradled the immortal Nelson as he died." This significant connection to Wouldham is remembered each year on the 21st October.

Normally we would organise for all children to lay a flower (getting over 400 there is quite a challenge) and then organise a special service to commemorate the occasion and remember all those serving (past and present) in the Royal Navy.

We usually welcome veterans from local Royal Naval Associations and residents from Pembroke House - a Royal Navy Care Home based in Gillingham.

Sadly, in the Covid year none of this has been possible!

We have taken a small number of our Year 6 children to continue the tradition of laying flowers and we have had special Trafalgar Day worship time in all of our class bubbles.

Its not the same but at least the weather is consistent with Trafalgar Day - it usually rains!

For all of our 'regulars' keeping in touch on Trafalgar Day- we have missed you but not forgotten you. We include you in our prayers and look forward to seeing you again next year when everything has hopefully returned to normal.

Hopefully you will get some joy from seeing our pictures below.
