Your child's writing needs to evidence the following criteria, in order to achieve age expectations.
Year 1:
- Write sentences that make sense
- Use 'and' to join ideas
- Use some capital letters
- Use some full stops
- Use some ?
- Use some !
- Use some capital letters for proper nouns
Year 2:
- Use capital letters
- Use full stops
- Use question marks correctly when required
- Use present & past tense
- Use conjunctions
- Use phonics to help spell words
- Spell many common exception words
- Consistently sized letters
- Use correct spacing between words
Year 3:
- Use the diagonal & horizontal strokes to join some letters
- Organise writing into paragraphs
- Use nouns or pronouns for clarity & cohesion
- Use a wider range of conjunctions, e.g. when, if, because, although
- Use fronted adverbials, making some use of commas after them
- Use inverted commas in direct speech
- Use simple organisational devices

Year 4:
- Use legible & consistent joined handwriting
- Spell some words from the year 3/4 list correctly
- Use the present perfect form of verbs
- Use conjunctions, adverbs & prepositions to express time & cause
- Use commas after fronted adverbials
- Use & punctuate direct speech mostly correctly
Year 5:
- Use paragraphs to organise ideas
- Describe settings and characters
- Use simple devices to structure writing (e.g. headings, sub-headings, bullet points)
- Use capital letters
- Use full stops
- Use question marks
- Use commas for lists
- Use apostrophes for contraction
- Spell most words from lists correctly
- Use legible joined handwriting
Year 6
- Describe settings, characters and atmosphere
- Dialogue to show character & advance action
- Appropriate vocab & grammar (e.g. contractions, passive & modal verbs)
- Range of cohesive devices (e.g. conjunctions, adverbials, pronouns & synonyms)
- Consistent tense
- Range of punctuation : ; () -
- Spelling
